Masja Nødtvedt
Masja is working with the themes of feeling shunned and different, isolated and outcast. Feeling like an outsider or (bytting- norwegian term for troll children from old tales) in today's society. This theme has been important as Masja has often felt these on her own body. Felt what it is like to be shunned or disowned for several reasons. From becoming a single mother at a very early age, to struggling with mental illness in the form of depression and suicidal thoughts. Being mentally ill and how one look at one's own body when depressed, is one of the main reasons Masja started to explore and practise perfomance.
In many of Masja's performances, suits often play a central role. The performances themselves are often about exploring the structures of materials and exploring the constraints that arise. Both limitations within the theme Masja work with, and own limitations under the performance. During the performance she often uses sounds and voices that can be reminiscent of joik and growling, as well as movements associated with rituals and dance. The aforementioned suits are based on Norwegian textile crafts, and exploration of the contrasts created by using non-textile materials together with textiles. The themes in the suits themselves revolve aroud themes of Nordic belonging and herritage, using folk tales, mythology and culture. This is often expressed as an interpretation of various personas in Sami and Norse culture, or folk tales that have nature as their main element. How nature is created and broken down. Within this, it is also natural that issues surrounding the climate crisis become an element of the whole.
Masja describes his own work as follows: “It is for me the artist's experience during the creation of the work, and the feelings that are aroused in the viewer of the work that are important. I want to arouse curiosity in the viewer by working with what is often seen as scary, uncanny or unnatural. Much like creatures were feared and detested folk tales, and like minorities can feel unwanted or like outcast due to their herritage» Masja is born in Tromsø in 1992 but lives in Bergen. She is attending Bergen Academy of contemporary art and has previously attended the art prep school in Bergen 2016-2018
